We attach brightly colored surveyor tape to pieces of our equipment that we might otherwise lose and the hummingbirds are attracted to the colors but otherwise derive no benefit. We always felt bad about that and finally decided to bring a small hummingbird feeder with us and it proved a big success. But prior to our most recent trip in 2009, the feeder had broken and we did not have a chance to replace it. But the hummingbirds still came to the surveyor tape. We sterilized everything and made some sterile sugar solution to put in it. It worked and the hummingbirds seemed to enjoy it, so much that, in the morning when it was empty, we would be mobbed by anxious individuals and they would start feeding while we were still holding it. The Rufous Hummingbird is the only hummingbird species that occurs as far north as Prince William Sound. Some occur in the Anchorage area though we have never seen them around our house.
